What Is Semaglutide

A Clinically Studied GLP-1 Option for Medical Weight Loss

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — a medication that mimics a natural hormone your body releases after eating. It targets appetite-regulating centers in the brain, slows gastric emptying, and may help support blood sugar regulation, making it easier to reduce intake and lose weight consistently over time.

FDA-approved for chronic weight management as Wegovy (injection), with a new high-dose Wegovy HD at 7.2 mg approved in March 2026. At StackMD, we prescribe compounded, branded, and high-dose options — all under direct physician oversight from our Long Island, NY clinic. Need a stronger approach? Some patients may be better candidates for tirzepatide treatment.

How Semaglutide Works

1

Appetite Regulation

Signals the brain's hunger centers to help reduce appetite and cravings, designed to improve portion control over time.

2

Slowed Gastric Emptying

Food moves more slowly through your digestive system, extending fullness after meals.

3

Blood Sugar Support

Stimulates insulin release in response to food, helping support blood glucose regulation — especially helpful for insulin resistance.

4

Physician-Guided Titration

Dose is started low and increased gradually to minimize side effects while optimizing results.

FDA Approved · March 2026 New High-Dose Option

Wegovy HD — Semaglutide 7.2 mg

For patients who have tolerated the standard 2.4 mg Wegovy dose and need stronger results, the FDA approved Wegovy HD — a 7.2 mg weekly semaglutide injection — in March 2026. It is indicated for adults with obesity who have tolerated the 2.4 mg dose for at least 4 weeks and require additional weight reduction.

In the STEP UP Phase 3b trial published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, patients on the 7.2 mg dose achieved an average weight loss of 20.7% over 72 weeks — compared to 17.5% at the standard 2.4 mg dose. Approximately one in three patients lost 25% or more of their body weight. Ask about eligibility at your consultation.

Available as compounded, branded Wegovy, or the new high-dose Wegovy HD (7.2 mg). May help support 15–20%+ body weight reduction. Higher Potency Option

Tirzepatide

A dual-action medication targeting both GLP-1 and GIP receptors simultaneously. In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial (NEJM, 2025), tirzepatide produced nearly 50% greater weight loss than semaglutide. May be a better fit for patients with insulin resistance, prior GLP-1 use, or those looking to maximize clinical outcomes.
